After reading this step-by-step guide you will be able to set up your first text message automation.

I will use a clothing store called Corner Fabric as an example and walk you through how I would personally use Respond Flow to set up my text message automation to sign-up customers and automatically follow up with them to increase sales.

1. Create a Simple Signup Form.

To begin I would create a form to collect as much information as I can without taking more than 1 minute of my customers time. The longer the signup, the more it feels like a burden rather than a reward. I would use a form creator that can integrate with Google Sheets in order to simplify storing your submission. Most form software connects with Google Sheets, but my favorite is Typeform since they have a direct integration. I would make a very simple form to collect First Name, Last Name, Phone, and Email.

2. Create a QR Code

Once the form is published, I would copy the URL and go to a free QR code generator to create a quick and easy QR code. That way the user can scan the QR code to access the form removing friction by saving the customer time finding the form. My personal favorite QR code generator is The QR Code Generator. Now print out the QR code and place it by the checkout counter.

3. Connect Typeform to Google Sheets

In order to minimize manual entry and supervision, I would connect the Typeform form to a Google Sheets document. You can do so by going to the “Connect” page within your Typeform landing page, go to the “Integration” section and scroll down until you find the Google Sheets integration. Click the “Connect” button on the right-hand side and follow the instructions until it’s activated.

4. Connect to Respond Flow’s Text Automation Software

Now that you should have your leads information automatically generated on a Google Sheets page you should connect it to your Respond Flow account. Log in or create an account on Zapier – create a zap that triggers on “New Spreadsheet Row” and make it pull the leads First Name, Last Name and Number. Select an action zap to “Create New Contact” in Respond Flow.

5. Segment Your Users

Every new lead created will automatically be tagged with: "External" and "Zapier". This will allow you to set up automations for only the people who sign up through your Zapier automation. You are also able to manually add tags to contacts directly in Respond Flow if you want to add other custom tags.

6. Start Building Your Community

By now you should have all you need to start living up to your promised value. We have several blogs about best-practice texting campaigns that are worth your time reading up on before starting to text. The secret is to offer value with every message without making it too detailed. Lead customers to a separate RSVP site or send images that hold the event details.
